Search Engine Wars Extend to Paid Content

Rupert Murdoch’s public jabs at Google seem to have paid off. After Murdoch’s threats to block Google from indexing content from his 175 newspapers and multiple news Web sites, claiming that the search giant offered no value to its model, Google today announced an alteration to its policy.

Banking on the Facebook App Economy

Some prominent Facebook app developers breathed a heavy sigh of despair last week when Facebook announced that it would effectively mute involuntary app notifications messages (e.g. “Mark Just Leveled Up in Mafia Wars”). For some of the huge gaming apps, such as Mafia Wars and Farmville, notifications generated major traffic – as much as 70%, according to TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington.

Pay Per Tweet Marketing: Enabling Brand Ambassadors or Creating Spam?

Paid status updates are nothing new on Twitter. Marketers have been on the site nearly since the beginning, and there’s no telling how many millions of active user accounts might actually be spammers in disguise.

There’s a new player in the paid posting space, however, and its name is PaidPerTweet.com.

The Associated Press Picks a Fight with Google, Biting the Hand that Feeds

In a move that could change the way news is disseminated and found on the Web, the Associated Press (AP) has declared that its news articles should no longer be freely indexed in search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo without permission. AP President Tom Curley’s statement means that even minimal use of a news article online should require a licensing agreement.

Is Amazon’s Kindle Ushering in a New Era of Paid Content?

In today's Silicon Valley Insider, Henry Blodget observes that Amazon Kindle owners don't seem to balk at the idea of paying for content. Although his observation is merely a person anecdote, it's worth nothing that industry analysts estimated total eBook reader sales (including Kindle, Sony eReader and others) at well over a million units in 2008, and that doesn't count the millions of mobile phone users worldwide that already paying for downloadable books. Presumably, the majority of these early adopters are voracious readers purchasing several items per year; we also know that some number of them have even (gasp!) subscribed to the New York Times and other periodicals despite the fact that those publications can even be read for free.
